The Technical Advisory Group on SARS-CoV-2 Virus Evolution (TAG-VE) that monitors and assesses the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 has advised the World Health Organization (WHO) that the B.1.1.529 variant should be designated as a Variant of Concern (VOC), named Omicron. This variant carries a large number of mutations, and preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection compared to other VOCs.
